El Ourit Waterfalls: Nature's Melody
Experience the lush beauty of the El Ourit waterfalls and discover the historic railway viaduct.
Just seven kilometers from the center of Tlemcen, the rugged landscape of the mountains gives way to a lush, verdant gorge. Here, the Safsaf River plunges over rocky tiers to create the El Ourit Waterfalls (Cascades d’El Ourit), one of the most picturesque natural sites in western Algeria.
A Natural Oasis
For generations, El Ourit has been a favored escape for the people of Tlemcen. Surrounded by dense pine forests and Mediterranean flora, the area offers a cool, refreshing microclimate that is especially welcome during the hot summer months. The sound of the water cascading over the rocks creates a natural melody that immediately soothes the soul.
The waterfalls are composed of seven distinct tiers, with the highest drop being particularly spectacular after heavy rains or the spring snowmelt from the nearby mountains. The surrounding National Park of Tlemcen ensures that the diverse flora and fauna of the gorge are protected, making it a wonderful spot for birdwatching and gentle hiking.
The Bridge Connection
What makes El Ourit truly unique is the striking juxtaposition of natural beauty and industrial-era engineering. Spanning the gorge just above the waterfalls is a magnificent railway viaduct built in 1890.
This elegant iron structure was designed by two french companies. The viaduct was part of the ambitious colonial project to connect the cities of Oran and Tlemcen by rail. Today, the rusty red ironwork of the bridge contrasts beautifully with the green canopy and the white foam of the waterfalls, creating a perfect subject for photography.
A Place of Legends
Like many natural wonders in Algeria, El Ourit is steeped in local folklore. The name itself is said to derive from a Berber word meaning “the steep place.” Legends speak of the healing properties of the water and the protective spirits that reside in the gorge.
Whether you come to admire the bridge’s engineering, to enjoy a family picnic under the trees, or simply to listen to the rushing water, El Ourit offers a perfect blend of nature and history, just a stone’s throw from the ancient Zianid capital.
